A French inquiry has found that Poly Implant Prostheses – or PIPs – are filled with an unapproved gel and are missing protective barriers. The French company which produced PIPs has gone into administration. All the devices have been recalled in France.

More than 300,000 implants are believed to have been sold globally by PIP over the last 12 years.About 50,000 British women may have these implants. 30,000  French women  were given a potentially defective type of breast implant.

The  UK body for plastic surgeons the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons [BAAPS]  warns against alarm, but said those with PIPs needed a check-up within six months.

“This is certainly an unusual situation but so far there is no serious cause for alarm – whilst further tests are conducted into the substance, we recommend that women who’ve undergone breast augmentation contact their surgeons to find out what type of implant was used,” said its president Nigel Mercer

If an ultrasound establishes that the implant is weakened or ruptured, then both should be removed, BAAPS advised.

PIP used non-medical grade silicone believed to be made for mattresses, according to BAAPS. This meant the low-cost devices were more likely to split – 10% of them did so within the first year – when, on average, implants should last 10 years.

Eight cases of cancer had so far been reported in patients with PIP implants,

UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there was “insufficient evidence to indicate any association with cancer” after reviewing the available evidence with the relevant UK professional bodies.

And how often do we find that we fight our way through work right up to the Christmas holiday, but as soon as we relax on day one of our break – Zap! A sniffle starts and we get bunged up with a cold? Happy holidays? Fraught misery!

In UK around 130,000 cases  of cancer are diagnosed each year.

The findings of a major extensive and in depth analysis of the causes of cancers have been published in the British Journal of Cancer.

The headline finding is:

Four in every ten of all cancers diagnosed in the UK each year are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things, the study report reveals.

Lead author, Professor Max Parker states “Many people believe cancer is down to fate or is ‘in the genes’ and its luck of the draw whether they get it.”   Prof Parker continues:

“Looking at the evidence it’s clear that around 40% of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change”

The top related causes  differ between men and women.  Among 150,000 men and among 150,000 women  in UK  cancer diagnoses, the findings showed related causes as follows:

So the message is clear :

Take control of your life and take control early by creating healthy habits.

Take action now.       Train  your children.

For men and women : Quit smoking now – it is a carcinogen – it will likely kill 1 in 4 of you before your time.

For men : Eat fruit and vegetables!!   Cut down your alcohol intake.!     Control your weight!

For women: Control your weight!     Limit sunbed use!    Eat fruit and veg!      Beware alcohol abuse!

And everyone know too that 1 in 5 stomach cancers are related to excess salt added to or within most  fast foods.

I urge you to change your lives for the better.

Resist saying ‘I’ve heard all this before’.  Resist burying your head in the sand.

It seems that every winter lots of us add a few pounds, and come spring those pounds don’t  naturally fall off again – they hang around – literally!   And so we get a little heavier every year.

Those extra pounds  just seem to ‘suddenly appear’. And they can be really tough to get rid of.  Losing weight is not easy. At least, it’s always  like that for me.  I find it ‘hard work’ to get shot of those extra pounds weight!  And it’s easier to stay ahead of the problem if you can;  certainly start taking ‘remedial’ measures before the situation gets really out of hand.

Unwanted weight increase if left unaddressed will affect and change your whole personality and social life as well as your health.
